Where does the water actually go?
Trace the route on your own house and it becomes obvious how many points can fail. Rain lands on the roof, runs to the eaves, enters the gutter, travels along a fall to an outlet, drops down the downpipe, exits at a shoe, and enters a gully or a below ground connection. Every one of those transitions can fail, and most are not the length of gutter people look at first.
The two that fail most often are the outlet and the gully. An outlet partially blocked with moss and grit restricts flow, so the gutter fills and spills over the front edge during heavy rain, which looks exactly like a sagging or undersized gutter. A gully choked with silt and leaf litter backs water up the downpipe, and once the pipe is full the water finds the nearest joint.

Why downpipe position and size matter
A gutter has a maximum flow capacity that depends on its profile, its fall and how far water has to travel to reach an outlet. Put a single downpipe at one end of a long run and the water at the far end has a long way to go, arriving at a section that is already carrying everything upstream. That is when a technically adequate gutter overflows in the middle of a run.
The other common problem is a downpipe that discharges somewhere unhelpful. A shoe pointing at a wall, a pipe that ends above a paved area with a fall towards the house, or a discharge onto a flat roof below all move the problem rather than solving it. Getting the outfall right is cheap at installation and expensive to correct later.

Why this shows up as damp inside the house
Water repeatedly soaking the same patch of brickwork will eventually find its way in, and it usually appears internally some distance from the actual source. A leaking downpipe joint at first floor level can present as a damp patch on a ground floor wall. Because the internal symptom is nowhere near the external cause, this gets diagnosed as rising damp or a wall problem and treated accordingly, which does not work. The other consequence is decay to the roofline itself. Water overtopping a gutter runs behind the fascia, soaks the roof timber ends and, on older properties with timber roofline, starts rot. uPVC, aluminium and cast iron
The material changes how a system behaves and how it is repaired. uPVC is standard on most modern Wirral homes, uses clipped joints with rubber seals, and is straightforward to replace section by section. Aluminium is stronger, holds colour well and suits longer runs with fewer joints. Cast iron is found on period properties and lasts a very long time, but it is heavy, needs painting, and its joints are sealed rather than clipped.
A frequent mistake is mixing systems, joining a uPVC downpipe to a cast iron gutter with an improvised adaptor. It works for a while and then leaks at the interface. A twice yearly rainwater check that takes twenty minutes
- Look at the gutters during heavy rain and note exactly where water spills over.
